The prevalence rate of hypertension in Hong Kong has risen progressively; according to figures obtained from the Department of Health, the number of patients hypertension has increased in recent years. It was estimated in 2014 that about 12.6% of Hong Kong citizens suffer from hypertension, mainly due to aging population, unhealthy lifestyle habits, and increased public awareness on diagnosis. Most patients are unaware of their own conditions since hypertension normally does not present any signs or symptoms. Yet poor management may precipitate illnesses such as coronary heart disease, stroke, dementia, kidney failure and retinal degeneration, all of which are potentially fatal.

In order to enhance public awareness on hypertension and the use of relevant medications, CU Community Health And Medication-safety Promotion Inter-school Outreach Network (CU CHAMPION) will collaborate with two chain community pharmacies in offering blood measurement service at 20 designated stores. In addition, on-site registered pharmacists will provide drug consultation service. This service serves as a continuation of May Measurement Month campaign - a research focusing on blood pressure management of global population - organized throughout the world by the International Society of Hypertension and the World Hypertension League. Through such service, CU CHAMPION aims to instill  knowledge on hypertension and safe use of associated medications in members of the community, so that patients could seek medical assistance and modify lifestyle habits at an early stage, thereby reduce chances of developing hypertension-induced diseases.

Citizens may visit designated pharmacies for free-of-charge blood pressure measurement and on-site registered pharmacist consultation services from today onward until 31st May, 2018.
