Diabetes Prevention Day
(DM Day)

CU CHAMPION collaborate with PREVENT.DM in organizing CUHK Diabetes Prevention Day. This activity is another large-scale event on health check and disease prevention education held by CUHK campus since Atrial Fibrillation Day held in 2015.

In recent years, diabetes has struck patients at a younger age, while the diagnostic rate of Type 2 diabetes has increased progressively throughout the world – diabetes has gradually become a health issue that requires global attention.

As the saying goes, ‘prevention is better than cure’, prevalence of diabetes among children and adults could be greatly reduced if we manage to prevent the disease starting from childhood. We hope to collaborate with healthcare professionals of various disciplines, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and Chinese medical practitioners, to provide comprehensive health education among citizens of different age groups.

The project was supported by the I·CARE project fund from the CUHK.

PREVENT.DM is a social service project initiated by students from the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. Through a series of community outreach services and fun day activities, students aim to enhance knowledge and awareness of diabetes within general public, as well as contribute to society by utilizing their professional  knowledge acquired from university studies.

Core Committee of PREVENT.DM consists of students from different professional disciplines (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health), with most of them being former members of CU CHAMPION Core Team whom possess plentiful experience in organizing community outreach services. We also hope that this project could serve as an initiative for more students to enter the community and train their skills in promoting community health, thereby become all-rounded healthcare professionals.

What We Have Done

In 2017, we organized four community outreach sessions in collaboration with i.CARE, CUHK and Boys and Girls Club Association. We served over 100 children and instilled knowledge on diabetes through interactive events such as workshops and talks. We hope that these activities could encourage children to develop healthy lifestyle, thereby preventing diabetes.

In view of the positive feedback received after the first project, we planned to extend the scheme to adults and the elderly to further spread the message of diabetes prevention within society. Unfortunately, we were not able to do so due to limited resources and time. After months of negotiation, we successfully applied for another grant from i.CARE, CUHK to continue our project, allowing more people to benefit from our program.
