As a medical student, I always attend lessons in school but lack social experience. Being a member in CU CHAMPION, I can utilize the knowledge I acquired and reach out to the society. Through organizing various services and workshops, I can understand more about our community and be more compassionate. Cooperating with schoolmates of different majors, my communication skills and sense of responsibility can also be enhanced. I hope that this year of service will make me better prepared to be a future healthcare professional.

Nursing Year 3

Wu Yee Sun College

I had participated in different outreach activities when I was a Champ Mentor last year. In the past, I thought hospital was a place for rescue to which we had to devote the most resources and effort. After participating in several services organised by CU Champion, I found that community healthcare was always being overlooked. Many citizens who have chronic diseases lack medical knowledge and this will become a hidden concern for public health. Thus, the mission of CU Champion is promoting healthy lifestyle within the community. At the same, as a nursing student, I can familiarize the working environment and strengthen my confidence when I work in the hospital in the future after joining CU Champion.

I always want to make full use of the knowledge acquired in lessons, and put theory into practice. I am passionate about helping the underprivileged in the community because I can get a sense of satisfaction after I can see how our intervention can make a difference in their lives. I hope to look into the lives of people from different walks of life through designing questionnaires and analyzing the data collected from the elderly. I can explore deeper into the most urgent need of the underprivileged, which in turns allows us to adjust our intervention and maximize the effectiveness of intervention. Therefore, I always think the research part of the programme is meaningful and important.

Knowing that here are still many underprivileged in this society, I would like to help out through the CU Champion Team, which provides valuable opportunities for us to reach out . I love to reach out to more of the outside world, and I have always hoped that I could use my power to help others. Through CU Champion, I hope to participate in various services for different people, like by providing health checks to the elderly or promoting to the public about the medical facts. Either being a student from medical faculty or a member of this community, I believe I have the responsibility to contribute and I am glad to have a chance here.

Medicine Year 3

Wu Yee Sun College

As a medical student, I mainly focus on the acquisition of fundamental knowledge of biomedical sciences in my preclinical years. Immersed in the piles and piles of lecture notes, I find myself seemingly beginning to forget that medicine is people-centred. CU Champion provides me an opportunity to collaborate with students from different disciplines of the Faculty of Medicine. Through means like outreaches, I believe I am able to apply what I have learnt to social services. CU champion is also a channel for me to grasp a more in-depth understanding of the roles and characteristics of other healthcare professionals that I am going to team with when I become a doctor.

As a Core Team member this year, I hope I can promote health knowledge in the community to enhance the health literacy of the general public, from the perspective of public health.

The misuse of medications is very common among the elderly as they have more chronic diseases and are prescribed more medications. It is frequently seen that the old people are confused about the directions on the label or even store the drugs inappropriately. Therefore, I hope to join the outreach programs to organize a series of health talks and body check-up for the older adults. I wish to educate the public about the proper medication use and enhance patient compliance.
