Outreach Services

About

CUHK Community Health Outreach Services 2015 aims to promote medication safety, raise the awareness of elderly and other citizens from different districts. CHAMPION volunteers from Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), will conduct basic health check and medication survey to understand the habit and medication problems of the elders. Registered pharmacists will also provide drug counseling and suggestions to improve elders’ attitudes toward medication.

Summer Outreach

Period: July 4 to September 5, 2015 (Saturdays) 

Target: Elders from 26 local elderly and community service centres

The summer service aims to promote medication safety and health education to elderly from urban and rural areas of Hong Kong. ​The outreach service also improved the students’ understanding in geriatric care and their communication skills with elders.

 

In addition, health and life style survey, drugs recording, glucose, blood pressure, ECG, Body Mass Index (BMI) monitoring, and medication safety education were conducted for each elderly participant in each outreach session. Registered pharmacists also provided drug counseling and suggestions to improve elders’ attitudes toward medication. 

Date: 9 January, 2016 (Saturday)

Venue: The Salvation Army Heng On Hostel

Time: 1pm-4:30pm

Target: Individuals with intellectual disability

 

The life expectancy of people with intellectual disability has increased over the years. These individuals have as much medication needs as ordinary people. However there are not enough studies pointing out the medication problems associate with people living with intellectual disability. 

Service Summary:

A team of 19 CHAMPION volunteers from Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Chinese Medicine, teacher and pharmacists conducted basic health check, and medication survey for 34 hostel residents with intellectual disabilities. Through participating in this service, student volunteers gained first hand experience on communicating with individuals with intellectual disabilities, as well as understanding their habit, health background, and medication problems.

Spring Outreach

Date: April 2 & April 9, 2016 (Saturday)

Target: Elders in Elderly Community Centre at Yuen Long & Tin Shui Wai

The spring service aims at promoting healthy lifestyle, and medication safety among the elders. In the service, student volunteers explained to elders that the correct way of storing drugs. Registered pharmacists also provided drug counseling and suggestions to improve elders’ attitudes toward medication. Apart from delivering medication safety knowledge, student volunteers also got to understand the habit and medication problems of the elders. 

The team served 90 elders in the Spring Outreach 2016.
